Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon recycles Heatsheets® through the Blankets to Boards™ program

May 11th, 2012

Petaluma, Calif., May 11, 2012 – Advanced Flexible Materials (AFMInc) and Trex Company continue to grow their successful Heatsheets® Blankets to Boards™ recycling program thanks to participation from Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon (DSGPM) on May 6, 2012.

Through funding from both the Alcoa Foundation and the DSGPM, Zero Waste Pittsburgh was able to be involved with the overall greening of the Pittsburgh Marathon. Kyle Winkler, Program Manager with Zero Waste Pittsburgh worked together with the Marathon’s Green Team, in making the recycling efforts a success.

Approximately 10% of the total Heatsheets were collected and taken to a local Giant Eagle grocery store to consolidate with recycled grocery bags which will be recycled and repurposed through Trex, for transformation into durable and beautiful wood-alternative decking and railing products.

“As a major race, we are committed to ensuring we are acting in a sustainable way,” stated Dee Stathis, Director of Logistics and Operations for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. “We are thankful to Zero Waste Pittsburgh for their collaboration.”

Stephanie Deigan, president of Heatsheets event products reports, “More and more races are taking a proactive approach to greening their events and we are excited that the Pittsburgh Marathon and Zero Waste Pittsburgh came to us with a desire to recycle their Heatsheets as part of their green initiative.”

Launched in February 2011, Blankets to Boards represents a major improvement in the Heatsheets recycling process. AFMInc, which provides reflective insulation technologies for an extensive range of uses, allied with Trex to accept recyclable Heatsheets directly into its supply chain, primarily through collection at local grocery and department stores. As the nation’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products, Trex collects, salvages and repurposes plastic – along with wood scrap and sawdust – and turns it all into low-maintenance outdoor living products that stand up to the test of time.
